FLAGSTAFF, Ariz — The City of Flagstaff invites community input on a landmark three-dimensional artwork for installation at East Cedar Avenue and North West Street, as part of the Spruce Wash Wedge Detention Project. The proposed 13-foot sculpture features a tassel-eared Abert squirrel, an icon of Flagstaff, and a species and subspecies native to Flagstaff and the region.
An online survey, open now through September 3, is available to provide feedback on the preliminary design. Through a series of questions, participants can share how well the sculpture connects to the site, whether it serves as a welcoming feature for the area and offer any additional thoughts regarding materials, color or design. The artist team of Haddad|Drugan, in collaboration with the City of Flagstaff’s Beautification, Arts & Sciences program, will review all survey submissions, identifying possible refinements and address any community concerns.
The artwork, located across the street from Coconino High School and a bustling shopping center, will compliment a reconfigured corner featuring a new retaining wall and expanded sidewalk landing. The site is frequented by pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers of all ages.
“We encourage Flagstaff residents to learn more about the proposed sculpture and complete the community survey,” said Jana Weldon, program manager for the City of Flagstaff’s Beautification, Arts & Sciences program. “If you live or work on the Eastside, or have a strong connection to this area, your input is especially valuable.”
Haddad|Drugan was selected for the project by a panel representing the Beautification & Public Art Commission, City staff, Eastside residents and local organizations. Over the past year, the team has refined its concept through a site visit to understand the history and character of the Eastside, conversations with a focus group and insights from an earlier community survey which received more than 100 responses. This input has informed the creation of a one-of-a-kind, site-specific artwork that reflects the spirit of the Eastside. Recently completed Flagstaff installations by the artist team include “Lion Eyes (Through the Forest)” and “Southside Grove” at the Downtown Connection Center.
