Help shape the future of Coconino County Parks

COCONINO COUNTY — What does a park or natural area in your community need? Which trails could be enhanced? Which programs should expand? Coconino County Parks & Recreation is looking for residents in Districts 2, 4 and 5 to help answer those questions as members of the Parks & Recreation Commission (PRC).

The Commission is a citizen advisory body that weighs in on how county parks, trails, recreation programs and events are developed and operated, then makes recommendations directly to the Board of Supervisors. Commissioners serve three-year terms and meet monthly.

“Serving as a PRC Commissioner is a wonderful and efficient means to serve our community and our individual passion for our county parks, public spaces and recreational opportunities, as well as the residents and visitors who make use of what the County offers,” District 1 Commissioner Howard Brown said.

Residents do not need a parks background to serve. Some of the most valuable ideas come from people who use these spaces, with their kids, their dogs, their mountain bikes or their horses. Experience in conservation, event planning, park management, tourism or public service is a plus, not a requirement.

“Serving as a PRC Commissioner has been both interesting and fulfilling. I have very much enjoyed being more involved in my community and providing assistance when opportunities arise,” District 3 Commissioner Jean Marie Rieck said. “Being a Commissioner provides a wonderful opportunity to serve neighbors and visitors, while also working with a very important and necessary department of the County.”

Residents interested in serving must live in the district they represent:

•           District 2 includes portions of Flagstaff, such as Southside, Sunnyside and the Greenlaw neighborhoods.

•           District 4 covers communities including Moenkopi, Coalmine, Tonalea, Inscription House, Tolani Lake, Leupp, Doney Park and Winona.

•           District 5 includes Page, Fredonia, Tuba City, Coppermine, Kaibeto, Cameron and Timberline/Fernwood.
