U.S. Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) — Statement on Veterans Day

WASHINGTON – Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), a Marine combat veteran and member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, released the following statement on Veterans Day:

“Generations of Arizonans have stepped up to defend our democracy, our freedoms, and our way of life. Veterans Day is a chance to reflect on that service and honor our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and all those who have served, especially those who never made it home.

“As we remember their service, we must recommit ourselves to serving our veterans and servicemembers with the same respect and honor as they have served us. That means protecting the benefits and care our veterans have rightfully earned, ensuring access to high-quality health care, and strengthening the Department of Veterans Affairs, not cutting it.

“As a Marine and combat veteran, I had the honor of serving alongside some of the most dedicated men I’ve ever known. We owe it to them, and to everyone who has ever worn the uniform, to make sure no veteran ever falls through the cracks. I’ll never stop working to fulfill that promise to our veterans and their families.”

NAU students built a camera. It’s going to Mars.

Four cameras built by students and faculty at Northern Arizona University will soon launch into deep space on a dual spacecraft bound for Mars. Two traditional cameras and two infrared cameras, designed and constructed by 35 NAU students over the course of three semesters, will capture images from the research mission ESCAPADE.

FLAGSTAFF — To celebrate and recognize Flagstaff’s Hispanic roots, Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces invites the public to attend its 10th annual “Flagstaff Summertime Tardeada — Mariachi and Folklórico Festival” from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 224 S. Kendrick St., Flagstaff.

The event is FREE, open to the public and has drawn upwards of 400 visitors in past years.

Entertainment for this year includes the opening music of Cumbre, followed by a dance performance by Ballet Folklorico de Colores — Flagstaff, the return of the popular all-female Mariachi Rubor, with closing dance music by New Destiny.

Registration has opened for 2nd annual Northern Arizona Anti-Hunger Summit to be held on Sept. 4.

Thousands of visitors filled the streets of downtown Flagstaff for 2025 Fourth of July Parade

COCONINO COUNTY — Despite scattered rains the night before, thousands of visitors crowded into downtown Flagstaff on a beautiful morning to celebrate the 2025 Annual Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce/Nackard Pepsi 4th of July Parade on Friday, July 4, 2024.

The events began with a Guardian Air Transport helicopter flying overhead leading a parade featuring more than 100 entries. The Arizona Daily Sun reported between 15,000 to 20,000 people attended the annual event.

Members of the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) joined the Coconino County parade entry which featured public safety vehicles, the Majestics Car Club of Flagstaff, marching bands and other entries.

In one week, on July 17, people all across the country will gather together in honor of the late Rep. John Lewis to participate in the Good Trouble Lives On National Day of Action.

With MAGA Republicans continuing their ghoulish campaigns to terrorize communities, crush dissent, and tear families apart, it’s more important than ever that we stand up, speak out, and make some good trouble.

What’s good trouble?

Coined by civil rights leader Congressman John Lewis, “good trouble” means coming together to take non-violent action to challenge injustice and create meaningful change. That could look like a candlelight vigil, a community event, a rally, or any other creative way you can think of to stand up and remind the world that we will continue to fight back against this authoritarian regime.

FLAGSTAFF — Local residents once again turned out in force during a National Day of Action rally held on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at the Flagstaff City Hall.

With a crowd that easily exceeded 1,000 people, local residents once again assailed the Trump administration with an event that coincided with the anniversary of first shots of the American revolution in Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, along with weekend activities designed to recognize Earth Day, which will be officially to be recognized on April 22.

To recognize those events, a number of protestors carried “No to Kings” signs, as well as a variety of climate change banners, signs and Earth Day flags.

The local event was initially promoted by the Coconino County Democratic Party, with additional support from a variety of groups from Indivisible of Northern AZ, 50501, Catch Fire Movement, Women’s March and others.

Flagstaff Sustainability Office announces 2024 Sustainability Grant recipients

The Neighborhood Sustainability Grant is a competitive grant program that funds up to $7,500 for community projects related to food, waste, climate action, resilience, building energy, public health, and transportation.

New names for two Indigenous campus hubs

After a nine-month process involving community forums, surveys and meetings, NAU unveiled its renamed Office of Native American and Indigenous Advancement and Center for Native American and Indigenous Futures on Friday, Nov. 1. The office and center will continue to welcome Native American and Indigenous communities across all NAU campuses, bringing a sense of opportunity, kinship and hope.

Rock Your Mocs Week November 12-18

As part of Native American Heritage Month, next week is Rock Your Mocs Week, when Indigenous people across the country show their cultural pride by wearing traditional moccasins.

Moccasins are not always worn in public by Indigenous people. They hold special significance and are most often worn for ceremonies and other cultural events. During Rock Your Mocs Week, the National Park Service encourages Indigenous employees to take pride in their heritage by wearing moccasins. A flyer for this week can be found here.

Grand Canyon National Park is proud to celebrate Native cultures and traditions by helping to share their rich histories and ongoing contributions to our park and our country.

The Student Research Opportunity Grant helps military-connected students pursue their research goals. The grant of up to $6,000 was established by the Veterans and Military Service Office and Office of the Vice President for Research with the goal of creating more representation of student veterans in research fields.

Coconino County Buildings to be Adorned in Green Lights through Nov. 13 to Honor Nation’s Veterans

By an official, unanimous proclamation of the Coconino County Board of Supervisors, 15 buildings and facilities throughout Coconino County will be illuminated with green lights from November 7 through 13 as part of Operation Green Light. The buildings will include the County Courthouse Clock Tower and Administrative buildings in downtown Flagstaff, the Justice Center in Williams, the Public Library in Tuba City, the Justice Court in Fredonia, and many more.

Operation Green Light is a new national initiative of the National Association of Counties (NACo) to recognize U.S. military veterans, as well as raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their house to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends.

Former Marine finds a new calling

Tyler Derzay had a plan for his life. It didn’t involve math classes and final exams, and it definitely never included a graduate degree in engineering. Yet, this former Marine, who will graduate next month as the standard-bearer for the College of Engineering, Informatics, and Applied Sciences before beginning grad school, found a journey worth taking. As a Lumberjack, he made connections with professors and at the Veterans Success Center, met his wife and found a new life path that honored his family history as much as his military career did.

Zach Hamilton enlisted in the Marine Corps, “caught up in the romantic dream of dress blues and honor.” During his service, which included a stint in Afghanistan, and since leaving the Marines in 2013, he has reflected often on words his father, a veteran of Desert Storm, told him: The military provides experience he wouldn’t get anywhere else, but someday, he might look back at that experience through a different lens.
