FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff seeks community input for a three-dimensional landmark art feature to be installed at the promontory at East Cedar Avenue and North West Street as part of the Spruce Wash Wedge Detention Project.
“If you live on the Eastside or have a strong connection to this area, the artist team wants to hear from you,” said Jana Weldon, program manager for Beautification, Arts & Sciences. “This is your chance to share what makes this part of Flagstaff special.”
An online survey, open now through September 9, invites participants to answer a series of experiential questions designed to spark factual, imaginative, and community-rooted responses. Insights gathered will help the artist team develop a site-specific, one-of-a-kind artwork that reflects the spirit of the Eastside.
“Community input is an important part of the public art process,” said Weldon. “From selecting the artist team to developing concepts and final designs, community voices guide every stage. This ensures the artwork is impactful, enduring, and truly made by the community for the community.”
The artist team will review all survey submissions, identifying recurring themes, stories, cultural treasures and visions for the future. Combined with local research and artistic inspiration, these insights will guide the development of their initial concepts in the coming months. The community will then have another opportunity to provide input on preliminary designs during the next review period in 2026.
As part of the Spruce Wash Watershed Improvements flood mitigation project, the artwork will compliment a reconfigured promontory featuring a new retaining wall and expanded sidewalk landing.
Last spring, the artist team Haddad|Drugan was selected for the project by a panel comprised of representatives from the Beautification & Public Art Commission, City staff, Eastside residents and local organizations. Their recent public art installations include “Lion Eyes (Through the Forest)” and “Southside Grove” at the Downtown Connection Center.
