FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff is seeking input from the public and relevant stakeholders on proposed updates to the Engineering Design Standards and Specifications for New Infrastructure. The proposed updates to the design standards will allow fiber providers who have a franchise or license agreement that allows them to place facilities within city right-of-way to utilize a new technology known as micro-trenching as a method to install fiber.
Micro-trenching involves cutting a narrow trench down the edge of the street along the curb line to place fiber optic cables to serve commercial and residential customers with fiber optic communications. This method is anticipated to be less expensive, faster and less disruptive than existing methods. It also supports the City’s goal of encouraging the expansion of high-speed fiber internet and greater provider choice within the City.
The updated draft Engineering Design Standards can be viewed at flagstaff.az.gov/4697/Development-Engineering. Please submit any comments to Engineeringpermits@flagstaffaz.gov by Sept. 5, 2025. The proposed updates will then be presented to Council during the Oct. 7, 2025 Council Meeting for consideration.
