Farmers who raise livestock depend on the health and safety of those animals. When large predators threaten their wellbeing, it can financially devastating for them—the effects of which can be felt for years. Human-wildlife conflict has been highlighted as one of the globe’s most pressing human development and conservation dilemmas, and NAU’s Duan Biggs was determined to take a deeper look into this matter. He worked with researchers from throughout the world to study how the lives of those living alongside these large predators are impacted, and why developing countries were the one to suffer most.

In the 10 years since NAU opened its Phoenix Bioscience Core presence, it has doubled the number of programs offered, gone from 49 students to nearly 450 and partnered with health care providers throughout the state to give students experience in many different environment, ensuring they are prepared to provide high-quality, culturally competent health care to Arizona residents. It continues to grow with the addition of a hybrid occupational therapy program, which will begin in Fall 2023. It’s all part of NAU’s mission, said CHHS Dean Lillian Smith: “We will continue to meet the immense challenges facing health care head-on, working with our partners to ensure the people of Arizona have access to the care they need regardless of their location or socioeconomic status.”
