Images of the Month – May 2023

The ideal type (in the German language: Idealtypus) is a concept created by Max Weber used in the social sciences to assimilate the essential features of certain social events. Ideal types are those human beings who are recognized by all the inhabitants, they walk the streets attracting attention either for their clothing or for their carefree attitude towards life. They are part of the cultural heritage of each town.

For me, a typical character has an identity that manages to penetrate the popular mind. Their person becomes part of the landscape of a given culture, a human model that brings together a set of physical, psychological, and moral traits shaped by tradition, that exist in our community, and that we always expect to find when we travel to countries other than our own. In every community we find ideal types: the fisherman, the market vendors, the vagabond, the greengrocer, the immigrants, the lonely old man, the merchant, the new generation.

In this installment I show you some of my ideal type images captured during my recent trip to southern Italy and France. Certainly, the collection is not exhaustive. However, it allowed me to understand more about the socio-cultural reality of the region, as well as to verify the usefulness of the concept of ideal type in the social sciences.
