FLAGSTAFF — April is Arizona’s Water Awareness Month and the City of Flagstaff Water Conservation Program is organizing free events throughout the entire month of April to engage, educate, and inspire community members to be more water conscious.
Living in a high desert it is crucial for residents to understand the importance of practicing mindful water-use throughout their daily activities and beyond. Established by Executive Order in 2008, Water Awareness Month is a call to citizens and businesses throughout Arizona to become more water aware of their water-use habits and determine where they can reasonably reduce their water use.
As one of our initiatives, City of Flagstaff Mayor Coral Evans is joining mayors across the country in challenging their residents to conserve water, energy and other natural resources on behalf of their city through a series of informative, easy-to-use pledges online by taking part in the annual Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. In return, residents can win a new Toyota Prius, water saving fixtures, and hundreds of other prizes.
Water Awareness Month Schedule
April 1-2: Water Conservation Program kiosk at the Flagstaff Mall promoting the Mayor’s Water Conservation Challenge and Water Awareness Month events and activities.
April 7: Water Awareness Month Kickoff at City Hall for First Friday Art Walk starting at 5 pm. This will launch the Mayor’s Water Conservation Challenge including an art showcase featuring local artists, and Vice Mayor Jamie Whelan speaking about water topics important to the Flagstaff City Council as well as several water awareness short film screenings.
April 15: Public tour of the Rio de Flag Water Reclamation Plant (RSVP required) and a Flagstaff Urban Trail EcoWalk. The Rio tour features the treatment processes and equipment plus organization representatives will be on-site to provide information about the Flagstaff Urban Trail System, wetlands and wildlife areas. April 21: Rainwater Harvesting Workshop at Warner’s Nursery, 4pm-5pm.
April 22: Earth Day at Heritage Square, 11am to 2pm. Visit the Water Conservation Program booth encouraging residents to take an online pledge for the Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation and learn about water production, treatment and conservation in the City of Flagstaff.
April 29-30: Water Conservation Program kiosk at the Flagstaff Mall promoting the Mayor’s Water Conservation Challenge and Water Awareness Month events and activities.
