Culinary Class: Holiday Side Dishes

The holiday season is quickly approaching! Time to spend time with friends and family, start thinking about defrosting the turkey, and cracking out the side dish recipes. This special holiday focused culinary class will teach you how to make a variety of classic Thanksgiving side dishes such as mashed potatoes, stuffing, mac and cheese, and grilled brussels sprouts.

This cooking class will be held on November 19, noon-3:00 p.m., at the Fort Tuthill County Park Mess Hall in Flagstaff, AZ. It will be taught by our incredible culinary instructor, Willa McAuliffe.

The cost for this program is $25* for Adults (18 and older) and $15* for Youth (8 – 17 years old).

Pre-register here.

Wildlife Drinker Visitors

Wildlife have found the Fort Tuthill wildlife drinker! This 30 ft. long, 13,000-pound water tank can hold around 33,000 gallons of water, collected from the water catchment system. The wildlife camera captures our wildlife visitors. We will update with more sightings! Visit our Watchable Wildlife page on our website!

Sustainability from the 74th Coconino County Fair

Coconino County Sustainability partnered with Parks and Recreation at the 74th Coconino County Fair, to launch our pilot recycling program. While the Coconino County Fair has had recycling options in the past, this was the launch of a larger recycling initiative, with 35 bins and dedicated volunteers and staff who monitored the bins for contamination. The staff and volunteers also helped educated fairgoers about recycling.

The diversion rate was 7% by weight, 16% by volume.

The pilot recycling program focused on plastic bottles, carboard, and aluminum cans, as a starting point. The partnership between Sustainability and Parks and Recreation is planned to continue into the future.

Coconino County cares at the Fair and all year! Visit Coconino County Sustainability to learn more about how we can keep our home beautiful!

Book Corner

November is a cozy month, and what is cozier than curling up with a good book?

As many of us have food on our minds this time of year, Food Sovereignty the Navajo Way: Cooking with Tall Woman by Charlotte J. Frisbie with recipes by Tall Woman and assistance by Augusta Sandoval, is a read that can provide interesting perspectives on how we look at food in our area.

Aspiring writers may be trying NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) this November, and can get inspired by The Writing Life by Annie Dillard.

Young readers can get excited about birdwatching and wildlife migration this season with Migration: Incredible Animal Journeys by Mike Unwin and Jenni Desmond.

Check out these and other great reads from your branch of the Coconino County Public Library and find a great reading spot at one of our beautiful parks and natural areas!
