Winter Recreation Updates and Safety

Much of Coconino County is a winter wonderland! Parks and natural areas offer great winter recreation opportunities. Strap on your boots, snow shoes, or cross-country skis, and enjoy the trails. Make snow forts and snow people. Have a (safe) snowball fight. Enjoy the beauty of nature in the snow, whether birdwatching or walking in the trees.

There are no sledding hills at Fort Tuthill County Park. However, other forms of passive snow play are welcome.

For your safety and for the preservation of the biking features, remember that there is no sledding in the Fort Tuthill Bike Park.

Are you looking for information on snow play? A map of snow play areas? Ideas for fun, winter activities? Ways to stay safe and practice responsible recreation in winter? Download the Winter Recreation Map from Discover Flagstaff.

For road conditions, call 511 anywhere in Arizona or 1-888-411-ROAD (7623), or visit AZ511.com.

Snow tubing is available at Flagstaff Snow Park, which opens on the 16th, and Canyon Coasters in Williams.

Together, we can keep Coconino County beautiful by practicing Leave No Trace. Every year, volunteers and workers have to haul large amounts of trash from our home. Remember to always dispose of trash, especially broken sleds, in proper bins. Never play on highways, roads, or train tracks. Respect private property. Always have a bathroom plan and use the appropriate public restrooms.

Let’s show Coconino County how much we love our winter wonderland!

Book Corner

Have you heard of Jolabokaflod? This is an Icelandic tradition where people gift books on Christmas Eve and read into the night.

We think winter reading is a great way to warm up after a long day of recreating outdoors!

Let National Book Award-winner, Barry Lopez, transport you to winter stories from many locations with his beautiful book, Winter Count. This is a great book to inspire admiring the coldest of the seasons and nature in winter.

Young adult readers can get inspired by adventure and the call of the wild with Dogsong by Gary Paulsen.

Young readers can pair bird watching with the delightful book, Bird Count by Susan Edwards Richmond and Stephanie Fizer Coleman. This may inspire children to join their families on a volunteer bird count and to watch for our feathered friends in the parks and natural areas of Coconino County!

Get these and other cozy, winter reads at your local branch of the Coconino County Public Library!
