Seeding a Community Food System

FOOD!  In rich countries, like ours, we take it for granted. For those with even a middle-class income, food is in great abundance. But will it be in the future? As the planet heats up, and aquifers continue to be used up, will we have access to food?

Growing food locally is enormously challenging. At 7,000 feet, the growing season is short, water is scarce, and land is expensive.

Flagstaff College/Communiversity has partnered with seven local organizations to begin a community-wide conversation on food security in Flagstaff.

TerraBirds
Flagstaff Foodlink
Just Cultivation Coalition
Northern Arizona Rural Foods Pathways Project
Northern Arizona Climate Change Alliance
Friends of Flagstaff’s Future
The City of Flagstaff’s Office of Sustainability
Let’s think together about what is already happening, what needs to be done, and how to begin instituting change!

Our series starts on Thursday, April 4th

Seed, The Untold Story

“Our once abundant seed diversity—painstakingly created by ancient farmers and gardeners over countless millennia—has been drastically winnowed down to a handful of mass-produced varieties. In a harrowing and heartening story, reluctant food heroes rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds.”

Terra BIRDS is seeking applicants for a School Gardens Program Coordinator and for Garden Education Leadership Internships!
