Cultural Demonstration Program next week at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, January 10, 11, and 12, 2024, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Gerard Begay – Navajo Weaver

Renowned Diné artist, Gerard Begay, will demonstrate the fine art of traditional Navajo rug weaving from January 10-12 at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center.

Gerard’s grandmothers instructed him, and he enjoys weaving most traditional rug patterns, blankets, twill saddle blankets, rug dresses, along with contemporary designs.

Gerard sees weaving as a therapeutic tool to overcome our day-to-day challenges and carry on art that nearly vanished from his immediate family. Most importantly, Gerard is honored to bring life back to his grandmother’s loom and weaving tools and carry on the tradition.

A flyer for the program from January 1-11, 2024 can be found here.

South Rim District Reports Available

Winter Driving Tips from your Risk Management Office

Winter brings unique challenges and hazards for drivers. Though we have been lucky here so far this winter, there is already a fresh couple inches here on the South Rim.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, as of February 1, 2023, 1,300 people are killed and more than 116,000 are injured in crashes on snowy, slushy, or icy roads.

Important reminders:

  • Prepare for Winter Driving – inspect your tires, wipers, brakes, antifreeze levels, and heater. Clean your headlights and understand your vehicles’ traction control feature, if applicable.
  • Have a Plan A and a Plan B – Check the weather before you travel to avoid getting caught in a storm. Keep essentials like snacks, blankets, flashlights, and water in your car in case you get stranded.
  • Leave Space – Leave plenty of space between you and other vehicles, and SLOW DOWN

Employee Spotlight!

Jon Ebers

Project Manager/Civil Engineer

Division of Planning, Environments, and Projects (PEP)

I am a Project Manager and Civil Engineer with the Division of Planning, Environment and Projects. I’m stationed in the Coconino building in Flagstaff, AZ. I’m just a month into my position with the Park Service, I started on Monday, December 4. Previously, I’ve worked for the City of Flagstaff, Arizona Department of Transportation, and Coconino County Public Works in Project Management roles overseeing design, construction, and development projects.

In the private sector, I’ve worked for Natural Channel Design in Flagstaff where I was an engineer working on fish barrier designs and watershed related projects. While in the Chicago area, I was a resident engineer with d’Escoto working on runway and taxiway reconstruction projects at O’Hare airport, and with AECOM I designed bridge substructures and retaining walls for highway and railway projects.

I’ve been in Flagstaff since July of 2008, when my wife and I moved here. I love being outdoors with my family, my wife Heather, and daughters Gretchen and Erin. As a family we’ve taken some hikes in the canyon along Hermits Rest, Bright Angel and the South Kaibab, and we have plans to camp at Phantom Ranch soon.

I first visited the Grand Canyon in 2000, when I camped at the South Rim overnight, and I was overwhelmed by the beauty and vastness of this incredible park. I am so excited to be able to help bring projects from vision to completion from the smallest to the largest, it’s just an honor to be a part of the parks history and future.

Grand Canyon National Park, in northern Arizona, encompasses 278 miles (447 km) of the Colorado River and adjacent uplands. Located on the ancestral homeland of 11 Associated Tribes, Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular examples of erosion anywhere in the world—unmatched in the incomparable vistas it offers visitors on the rim. Grand Canyon National Park is a World Heritage Site. The National Park Service cares for the special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage.
