Museum of Northern Arizona — Much to look forward to at MNA

Message from Mary –
Snow finally fell, like a sparkling blanket of hope laid across the landscape. Precipitation in any form is welcome after the driest year on record and we dare to dream that this is a harbinger of things to come – more rain, more vaccines, more ability to gather together. At the same time, we realize a single snowfall won’t end a drought. Nor will the other problems we face disappear quickly.
We are planning for this year with the same creativity, caution, and resilience that got us through last year, ready to continue adapting as we go along. This means many of our annual events are being planned to take place in new ways, and often we set a date closer to the event to assess the current conditions and make a final decision on whether we can go forward or not. Keep reading this newsletter and following us on social media to stay informed.
The museum remains open for you, Thursdays through Sundays. With all the Covid-19 measures in place, including advance ticketing, it offers a safe indoor outing when you need a change of scenery. We hope to see you here soon.
Thank you for your support of MNA.

Museum Notes – 2020 is better in hindsight
Last year was a tough one, and it proved how tough we all are. At the very end of the year we put out an edition of Museum Notes looking back on 2020 and how we made it through. The publication exists, like so much from 2020, only online, which allowed us to save money on printing and mailing, as well as enabling a quick turn-around on information.
New Ventures Trips coming soon
Museum members will be the first to hear about each of the new trips planned, which include guided excursions to Grand Falls and Slate Mountain with geologist Kent Colbath, a float trip down the Verde River, and some very special Grand Canyon adventures. Sign up for a membership or renew today to get exclusive access to future day and multi-day Venture trips. Email membership@musnaz.org for details.

Feb. 19 – Something Fishy
March 5 – Potsherds- puzzles from the past
March 19 – Learning to see with Mary-Russell
This exhibition features paintings, photographs, and pottery by six women artists from 1900 to 1940. We’ve shared these art pieces on the MNA Facebook page and now you can watch an online tour with Alan Petersen, but seeing the art in person is so much better. With our new advance ticketing system, you can reserve your time to visit the museum and experience this art as it was meant to be seen.
Created more than a decade ago by Hopi artists Michael Kabotie and Delbridge Honanie, these large-scale paintings tell a story of the human journey through cycles of chaos and discord to places of wholeness and balance. Watch a gallery tour with Dr. Kelly Hayes-Gilpin and Ed Kabotie, read about the exhibit in Mountain Living, then make plans to come see the exhibit.
Don’t break this heart
Created by local artist George Averbeck, this blown-glass heart catches the light and glows…much like your own sweetheart does. It’s a beautiful gift that continues to say “I love you” wherever it hangs. Stop by the shop during regular museum hours for this or other thoughtful gifts, or browse online anytime to pick something special for someone special. Every purchase supports MNA and the artists.
Wear your heart on your sleeve
Featuring a heart carved from Kingman turquoise set into a silver band, this bracelet by Hispanic silversmith Ralph Sena is another example of the craftsmanship and artful design he’s known for. For more jewelry and gifts, visit the shop online, or in person when the museum is open.
