An Exciting Year Ahead
At Sedona Arts Center
Fall is the most beautiful time of year for painting outdoors from life here in the high desert and 25 of the most talented artists from around the country have won the privilege of demonstrating that in our 15th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival, Oct 12 – 19, 2020. This year’s event has been blessed by two anonymous ‘angels’ that donated a total of $10,000 in prize money! The event features paint-outs with all the artists, a Keynote by Festival Judge, Dave Santillanes, demonstrations, special receptions, and thanks to Lisa Dahl and Dahl Restaurant Group, a new paint-out at the beautiful Mariposa–Latin Inspired Grill!

The festival is embedded in a wonderful season of landscape painting workshops with some of the best instructors in the nation representing a diversity of styles. See all the plein air and studio landscape painting workshops HERE.

On December 14th Noon to 3pm our vibrant ceramics department provides the community with a bountiful Loving Bowls event benefiting non-profits that provide important services to the community. It is a chance to get together and enjoy delicious chili, shopping for bowls, and share camaraderie with friends while defending bids in a special silent auction.

Then we start the New Year off with a bang!

January features “31 Women Artists” a unique exhibition modeled on a 1943 show in NYC by Peggy Guggenheim. From a private collection, 6 artists are represented from that original exhibition and we invite contemporary women artists to submit work for the remaining 25 positions. The Exhibition embraces two dynamic themes– the empowerment of women in and through the arts and the continuing influence of Surrealism in contemporary art.

Glazed and Confused
September 15, 2019
In this six-hour workshop, we will cover everything from application techniques, testing, and tracking results so you can recreate glazes consistently. We will discuss how to modify your glazes – in essence, creating new glazes – with only a small amount of material. We’ll also explore how to use slips, washes and engobes to change and enhance glazes and broaden your color palette. Almost of the ideas and techniques will apply to Cone 10 as well as Cone 6 glazes.

The workshop has both a classroom component and a team glaze testing exercise. It is definitely not technical and is designed to get people excited and positive about glazing. Here is a brief outline of the topics to be covered:

Milky Way – Starry Night
September 21 – 22, 2019
Taking photos of the night sky and seeing just how many stars there are is always awe inspiring. Creating new compositions and experimenting with the stars has been an on-going quest for instructor, Charles Ruscher. In this workshop we will run thru the complete workflow; establishing compositional ideas using software to scout and pre-visualize, planning the shoot with astronomical software, exploring camera settings and lenses, being out in the night to photograph the stars and the next day into the computer where we cover organization, development, noise reduction, star stacking, stitching, compositing and finishing touches.

Fall Creative Opportunities!
Kathryn Stats
Plein Air in the Studio
October 19 – 21, 2019
Kathryn Stats is known for her vibrant color, dramatic compositions and subtle brushwork. In this studio workshop students will have the opportunity to choose whether they wish to work on landscape composition from photo-reference or with a still-life/floral situation or both!

Students will benefit from demonstrations, slide show and lecture, and one-on-one assistance with their paintings. Kathryn has taught workshops in plein air painting in numerous locations in Italy, Sedona and Utah and has been a keynote presenter at the Sedona Plein Air Festival and at the National Plein Air Convention. Now take this opportunity to work with Kathryn in the more controlled studio environment where artistic creativity and inspiration come together on larger scale or more developed work than plein air painting allows. This workshop is for those painters that have some experience and wish to take their work to the next level.

Plein Air Impressionism
October 19 – 21, 2019
One of the greatest struggles of landscape painters is to convey in small scale, the grandeur of a dramatic landscape.  Learn how to interpret such scenes and create illusions of depth, three dimensionality, scale with strategic details to make a scene come to life. The workshop will cover: composition, design, color, as well as practices for traveling with materials while eliminating a dangerous impact on health and the environment.  Plein air painters from beginner to expert will discover new perspectives and ideas.

Plein Air Painting in Sedona
October 9 – 11, 2019
Each group and each student is unique! My goal is to offer a roadmap that will continue to guide your creative journey long after the workshop is over. To bring more clarity to your work. To learn to paint with intent. To continue the journey from ‘painting’ to becoming a ‘painter’. And most importantly – how to develop the mindset of ‘practice’ that leads to successful ‘performance’.

Day one: I will be doing a demo start to finish, explaining my thought process for each step, aiding you in developing a personal methodology. During the demo we’ll touch on a variety of subjects – drawing, design, value, color, harmonizing your painting, materials and brush and paint handling. We will discuss how to approach your creative process – concept, scene selection and preparation. You will learn the steps that prepare the groundwork for a successful painting.

Day two: Permission to slow down and find the joy! You will have time to work through each of the preparatory steps for creating a painting ‘en plein air’.  I’ll be teaching a method not a style. Whether you’re new to plein air or an experienced professional having a structure that allows you to check your progress at each stage before moving on to the next will bring more consistency to your efforts. You’ll avoid a problem, unresolved from an early stage in the process, spoil what otherwise may have been an inspired painting. Start strong! End Strong!

Day three: The day will be devoted entirely to using the preparatory work from days one and two to bring your paintings to completion. Each student will receive individual instruction. The day will be devoted to putting into practice the concepts we’ve covered and allow you to focus on that on the thing that is going to put wind under your wings!

Bring your questions, your curiosity and some thoughts about what you’ve been most wanting to improve!
