Theatrikos Theatre Co. — February Newsletter – Charming comedy Harvey playing now through Feb. 11

Harvey, Theatrikos’ first show of 2024, opens to standing ovation
February 2024
One of the treasures of American theatre, and the basis for Jimmy Stewart’s Academy Award winning movie, Harvey runs now through February 11, 2024
Harvey is a charming, delightful and enchanting testimony towards the value of kindness over the importance of conventionality. A lovable and eccentric Pulitzer Prize winning classic American comedy about a perfect gentleman and his very strange best friend—a six foot tall invisible rabbit named Harvey.
“Harvey is a fun, comedic and heartwarming production, that will captivate the audience and have them questioning what really is important in their day to day lives,” said actor Daniel Wilson who plays Elwood P. Dowd, the Jimmy Stewart character. “This production touches on some topics that would be considered edgy with modern audiences, however, in the end, notions such as love, compassion and kindness will resonate with audience members and leave them with a smile!”
“Modern audiences will relate to this comedy because of its universal theme that we all create our own reality,” said director Mark Dessauer. “People love the movie with Jimmy Stewart and our production will be just as charming.”
“Laughing during rehearsals because of our talented cast” is a laughter that will be infectious with the audience Dessauer said. Wilson agrees, saying, “There are some amazing individuals in this production, each bringing a little something different to the table.”
“Harvey is the first show of our 2024 season,” said Theatrikos executive director Chris Verrill. 2024 season tickets are now available. “Theatrikos has an amazing season of shows lined up for 2024. A season that includes two major musicals, Annie and Elf, plus Men on Boats, a show about JW Powell’s first trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.”

What musicals do you most want to see in 2025? We are putting together our 2025 season. Here’s a short list of musicals that are 1) excellent, 2) popular with audiences, and 3) we think we have a director for. We’ll do more than musicals in 2025, of course. This is just the musicals survey. Pick your top three.
Strategic Plan Update
Theatrikos follows a carefully thought-out five year strategic plan and we’re now updating it. How do we improve artistic excellence while at the same time balancing the budget? How do we advance educational quality of TheatriKids? Where do our new weeknight films fit into all this? If you’d like input on the strategic plan, let us know.
Theatrikos Board of Directors—Your Questions Answered
Q. Who is on the Theatrikos board?
A.  The board currently has 12 members, who are all members of the Flagstaff community. All have a solid understanding of how to run the business end of theatre. All are volunteers, and many are actively involved in productions. The list of board members is on our website.
Q. What does the board do?  What is the relationship with the Executive Director?
A. Similar to corporate boards, nonprofit boards are responsible for overall management of the organization. The Executive Director is a salaried employee reporting to the board. The board sets policy and develops the strategic plan. The Executive Director implements the strategic plan and manages the organization on a daily basis. Staff members reporting to the Executive Director include the Education Director, the Tech Director, and the box office staff.
Q. Are there rules governing the activities of the board?
A. The board operates under the Bylaws, which can be found on the website. The Bylaws set forth the procedures for voting, appointing board members, and defines responsibilities of board and committee members as well as the Executive Director. The Bylaws establish the Executive Committee of the board, which consists of the officers plus one member-at-large. Officers are elected by the board members annually.
Q. How does one become a board member?
A. Candidates for board membership are nominated by members of the board, reviewed by the Executive Committee, and elected by the full board. Anyone interested in joining the board should request an interview with the Executive Director and one or more board members. Board members serve 3 year terms and can be re-elected to a second 3-year term before terming off the board.
Q. What happens at board meetings? Can anyone attend a board meeting?
A. The board meets on the third Monday of each month at 6 pm in the downstairs multipurpose room at the theatre as well as via Zoom. Guests are welcome to attend, and there is a time set aside for public comment to address the board. Sometimes the board goes into executive session to address sensitive matters, and guests and the staff are excused from executive sessions. Prior to each meeting, board members are sent a packet of reports from the various committees and staff members, including the Executive Director, and these are reviewed prior to the meeting, reserving time for questions. The board reviews and approves monthly financial reports from the Treasurer as well as the minutes of the previous meeting. Major policy issues, problems, and significant expenditures are discussed and voted on. Progress on the strategic plan is closely monitored.
