United Way of Northern Arizona — Supporting Youth (and Families) on Giving Tuesday

On Giving Tuesday, we come together to support the causes that matter most to us.

This year, I’m asking you to join us and create more opportunities for our communities in Coconino, Navajo, and Apache County to step up for our youth by supporting not only our children, but those who take care of them as well.

An underlying aspect of many of the programs we manage or fund is about being a partner to the parents and guardians who are raising the next generation.

As our Annual Campaign Co-Chair, Flagstaff Police Chief Dan Musselman recently said, “What I’m hearing from my officers is that both parents and youth need additional support and resources.”

When you donate to the United Way of Northern Arizona tomorrow on Giving Tuesday, you are helping to fund programs that help both generations, such as:

KinderCamp™ – In addition to preparing hundreds of preschoolers for kindergarten each year, teachers meet with each child’s parents or guardians to provide a meaningful first contact with someone from their child’s school. They are also given a literacy kit during these meetings, filled with fun activities for parents to do with their children. A donation of $1,000 covers the cost of one child attending this vital program.
Active Parenting: The First Five Years. This evidence-based parent education program will provide up to 80 parents or caregivers of children up to age 5 with classes in parenting skills. Active Parenting has shown significant increases in developmental knowledge, parenting efficiency, and decreasing parenting stress. For $205, a parent of caregiver receives 12 hours of parenting education instruction and family support services.
Dolly Parton Imagination Library. The country singer’s initiative provides a free book to a child every month from birth to age 5. It provides parents with a library of age-appropriate books to read to their child, igniting a passion for reading and learning, which is an important factor in future school success. A gift of $35 provides a year’s worth of books for a child.
