Week 2 of Immigration Awareness Month presented at NAU

FLAGSTAFF – Week two of “Immigration Awareness Month” opened on April 8 with the presentation “Humanitarian Activism on the Border,” featuring a discussion by John Fife on “Getting in the Way: Resistance Movements to Death on the Border.” The event was presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths — NAU.

Fife, who founded the Sanctuary Movement in the early 1980s to provide safe-haven in more than 600 churches in the United States to Central American refugees fleeing civil war in their countries.

During his presentation, Fife explained the history of the Sanctuary Movement and its battle against U.S. government immigration policy and the current humanitarian crisis at the border and how his group is seeking to provide water and other aid to immigrants.

Week two continued with the screening on April 9 of “The Undocumented.”

The screening of “Need to Know: Crossing the Line” was presented by Latin American Studies and No More Deaths on April 10.

Week two concluded with the presentation “The Humanitarian Crisis on the Border” on April 12 in the Cline Auditorium. Chelsea Halstead of the Colibrí Center for Human Rights talked about the challenges identifying human remains on the border and returning the bodies to their families during the presentation. Victoria López of the ACLU of Arizona explained the history behind the current immigrant deportation issue. The event also included a panel of students from NAU who explained what they have personally seen at the border.
