FLAGSTAFF, Ariz — Starting Monday, August 17, the City of Flagstaff (City) in partnership with Mountain Line and their contractor, Kinney Construction Services, will begin pedestrian crossing improvements in multiple locations along Fort Valley Road. Pedestrian crossing installation at the Fort Valley Road and Anderson Road/Whiting Road intersection and the Fort Valley Road and Meade Lane intersection will be complete in 2026. Work at the Fort Valley Road and Forest Avenue intersection will be completed at a later time.
Work may occur Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. One lane of traffic in each direction will always remain open throughout construction. Businesses, schools, and residential communities will remain fully accessible throughout the project. Motorists can expect travel delays, construction equipment in the roadway and traffic control devices. Periodic sidewalk and pedestrian closures may be necessary, with pedestrian detours along the Karen Cooper FUTS. Please follow the marked signage, travel safely throughout the project corridor and consider using an alternative route if possible.
Pedestrian crossings will be installed in the following locations along Fort Valley Road (also shown on the map):
- Fort Valley Road and Meade Lane
- Fort Valley Road and Anderson Road/Whiting Road
- Fort Valley Road and Forest Avenue (to be constructed at a later date)
These improvements are part of the “First Mile, Last Mile Initiative” which aims to add safe pedestrian infrastructure near Mountain Line bus stops throughout the City. There is currently no safe way to cross these intersections to access a bus stop. These crossings will feature a pedestrian refuge median, meaning pedestrians will only need to cross one lane of traffic at a time. Additionally, the crossing at Fort Valley Road and Forest Avenue features flashing lights that are commonly seen around the City.
