In this fun and creative class, suitable for both beginners and experienced ceramicists, you’ll learn a variety of hand-building techniques and explore your personal artistic vision in a welcoming, hands-on environment.
What You’ll Experience:
Foundational Techniques: Learn essential hand-building methods such as slab construction, coil building, and pinch pots, to create functional and decorative pieces.
Creative Projects: Each class includes demonstrations and hands-on practice in crafting items like bowls, mugs, vases, platters, and lidded boxes, plus optional advanced projects for experienced students.

Art History Talk–Framing the Self:
A Cultural History of Portraiture
with Brandelyn Andres
August 2, 2025 – 11am-12pm
Through an examination of both self-portraits and depictions of others, this lecture charts the art historical evolution of the genre of portraiture. By examining artists’ intentions, social contexts, and visual choices, we will consider how images of people not only reflect concepts of self but also shape collective understandings of identity, status, and humanity. We can learn much about ourselves as we look into the eyes of others.
Brandelyn Andres is a professor of art history at Yavapai College located in Prescott, Arizona where she teaches courses on art history, art appreciation, two-dimensional design, and popular culture.

As you know, the funding arts organizations and artists receive from the Arizona Commission on the Arts is something we have to fight for at the Arizona Legislature every year. We need your help to keep funding intact in the FY2026 state budget.
Specifically, we need you to contact your legislator and Governor Hobbs TODAY.
If you are a leader of an arts organization, we also need you to engage your volunteers, board members, donors, audiences and patrons in contacting their state elected officials. Often, their voices as constituents of these elected officials are the most persuasive. Please forward this message to them.
Lost & Found: Crafting with Nature for Ages 8-12

In this half-day camp class, kids will hand build animals using found branches, twigs, pinecones, and rocks. Bring home a slow pinecone turtle, a speedy stick horse, or a funny little twig caterpillar! The options are endless! Found-object sculpture is a great way to get those creative gears turning; kids will learn all about artistic improvisation and problem solving as they discover new, fun ways to use what’s around them.

You may have heard the news about National Endowment for the Arts grants and grant programs being terminated by DOGE recently.
While Sedona Arts Center has not been directly impacted by the current NEA grant terminations, we would be impacted by the elimination of the National Endowment for the Arts through our annual grant from the AZ Commission on the Arts. The entire field of arts and culture would be significantly impacted by this loss – be it research to the field, the millions of lives improved through participation in the arts, or the millions of jobs and the economic impact the arts have on America’s bottom line. The NEA’s funding is critical to us, but they provide our field so much more.

In this half-day camp class, kids will learn all about local bug species and paint rocks to look like their favorites! Arizona is home to so many incredible creatures; from dragonflies and butterflies to beetles and ants and many more, we’ll get into what makes these insects so cool and so important to our ecosystem. Campers will use acrylic paint to transform rocks into bugs. Weather-proof and perfect for the garden, kids can take home their new bug friends and create a lasting memory. This is the perfect activity for little artists AND little scientists!
Rocks and painting supplies provided.

Bugs Rock! Ages 6-12

May 29, 2025 – Thursday, 1-4pm
In this half-day camp class, kids will learn about the tie dye process and experiment with pattern techniques as they create a wearable rainbow! Tie dye supplies will be provided as well as bandanas to dye, but campers are encouraged to bring their own white t-shirts from home or anything else cotton they’d like to transform.

Teens ages 15-18 are invited to apply to Sedona Arts Center’s Gallery 928 program, a unique summer art apprenticeship that partners students with a master artist to create a work of public art.
This summer, Sedona Arts Center will offer its fourth year of Gallery 928, a unique art apprenticeship program for teens ages 15 to 18. Based on Chicago’s infamous Gallery 37 summer public art program started in the 1980s, students will be hired to apprentice with a master artist to create a public art mural for the Sedona Arts Center.
Apprentices will receive art instruction, knowledge of the public art field and develop tangible employment skills like resume building, presentation development and public speaking. Students will also receive a $500 stipend from Sedona Arts Center and 3 free college credits through Yavapai College. Up to 12 students will be selected to participate.

Ceramics : Advanced

April 14-May 19, 2025 – Mondays, 4-7pm
Designed for experienced ceramicists, this class offers a supportive studio environment for you to explore advanced throwing and hand-building techniques while working on personal projects. (Beginners are welcome in Ben/Lolo/John’s Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday classes or in the Pottery Wheel for Beginners on Saturdays.)
As part of the exhibition, a series of public programs are planned for April. The Sedona Film Festival will host two outdoor film screenings in the SAC parking lot: “42,” the inspiring story of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, on April 10, and “McFarland, USA,” the true story of a small-town underdog cross-country team, on April 24. Screenings will take place from 7:30 to 9pm and are $10 per person.

Art and sport meet at the “The Element of Sport” special exhibition from April 4 through 27, 2025. The exhibition kicks off with an opening reception Friday, April 4 from 4-6 pm, in conjunction with “Celebrate Sedona.” Visitors will enjoy an afternoon of artist demonstrations, food, wine, beer and music by DJ Shondra. Both events are free and open to the public, with complimentary parking located behind Sedona Arts Center’s Art Barn.
These are interesting times to say the least. I realize that it is hard to know what is going to happen from one day to the next but we here at Sedona Arts Center are continuing to move forward despite the uncertainty.

The Sedona Plein Air Festival takes place during the best weather period of the year at the height of tourist season and is supported by a group of very experienced and enthusiastic staff and volunteers. Introduction to Silver Clay

February 12 – 13: Wednesday–Thursday, 9am-1pm
Joan Roberts has been creating distinct wearable art pieces with metal clay for 2 decades. She will share techniques, methods and a few secrets to successful creation of jewelry pieces. Silver Clay is a mixture of microscopic particles of silver, distilled water and a non-toxic organic binder. When fired the silver sinters into a solid piece of “fine silver.” Participants do not need past experience in metal work or other clays to be very successful.
This class is divided into two mornings so pieces can be finished and loaded into a kiln at the end of the first day and finished and polished on the second. Participants will be provided with enough clay to create up to two pairs of earrings or a pendant.
Gaining a Perspective: Sharpening Your Drawing Skillset ONLINE

Learn the ins and outs of how to draw convincing buildings, landscapes, interiors and round objects with the use of linear and empirical perspective. We’ll be understanding this drawing concept through demonstrations, hands on drawing exercises, individualized instruction and looking at examples of some of the accomplished Renaissance and modern masters. Learn how to use perspective to your advantage to make great drawings!

Sedona Arts Center presents Out of the Fire: Student Ceramics Show January 25-26, 2025. The annual exhibition and sale features artworks by students and faculty from Sedona Arts Center’s ceramics department and is free and open to the public. The event will be held in the Art Barn Theatre Studio and kicks off with a special opening reception Friday, January 24, from 4-6pm.

Reimagining Ancient Forms with a Modern Twist

In this unique hand-building class, students will explore the fascinating world of historical pottery by reimagining ancient forms and techniques through a contemporary lens. Students will choose an iconic historical pot or ceramic vessel and recreate it using modern materials and personal interpretation. This course blends traditional craftsmanship with innovative design, allowing students to learn from the past while creating something entirely their own.
Prerequisite: Completion of a beginner-level ceramics course.
