Images of the Month – September 2022

In the second half of the 19th century, the term geographic determinism was coined by the German Friedrich Ratzel. According to Ratzel, the environment influences human groups in each area of the Earth, forcing them to assume specific behaviors and actions. In other words, human groups, including their cultures, are completely conditioned by their physical environment. These approaches have been used to explain that the physical and demographic characteristics of each country determine its possibilities for development and expansion, and therefore justify inequality at various levels. On the other hand, the Frenchman Lucien Lefebvre coined the term geographic possibilism or voluntarism, opposed to determinism, which considers human groups as capable of influencing and creating their own future through the modification of their environment. In other words, human groups take advantage of nature based on the techniques and tools available to them, or that they themselves develop to achieve their livelihoods.

These terms don’t have to be mutually exclusive. A combination of both terms is more appropriate. History is full of examples that demonstrate the possibility of human beings to flourish and adapt in wild environments, far from their native lands, making the most of the limited or specific resources provided by the new environment, and at the same time modifying it to establish a new way of life.

A clear example of the obsolescence of geographic determinism is the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean. During the 19th century, businesspeople and workers from all over the world -Asia, Europe, Africa- came to take advantage of the sandalwood bonanza, the whales, the pineapples, the land, and the people of Hawaii, permanently changing the socio-economic profile of the islands and leaving their permanent mark until today, thus demonstrating that the tenacity of human beings is capable of tolerating and dominating any environment. In these images, try to identify what is dictated by geography, and what is dictated by the free will of the human being.
