Raices: Afro-Mexican Identities Across Borders presents Son Jarocho April 1, 2 in Flagstaff

April 1-2FLAGSTAFF — Raices: Afro-Mexican Identities Across Borders to present “Gilberto Guitierrez of Son Jarocho group Mono Blanco” April 1, 2 in Flagstaff.

Son Jarocho is a participatory music and dance practice native to the state of Veracruz, Mexico that blends indigenous Mexican, African and Spanish elements. Son Jarocho has nurtured a cultural revival movement in both Mexico and through the U.S. through its fusion of melodies, phrasings and rhythms.

A concert and discussion will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 1 at the Gardner Auditorium, W.A. Franke College of Business at Northern Arizona University.

A participatory workshop will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 2 at The Center for Indigenous Music and Culture, 213 S. San Francisco St., Flagstaff.

All events are free and open to the public.
